As part of my Mass Media and Society course, I analysed the film "The Help" through the lens of media representation, specifically focus on how different racial groups are portrayed and how their relationships and power dynamics unfold on screen. This review explores the layered interactions between Black domestic workers and their white employers in 1960s Mississippi, shedding light on the subtle and overt messages media can convey about race, privilege, and resistance.
Through this assignment, I reflected not only on cinematic storytelling, but also on the responsibility of media to represent marginalised voices authentically. It was a valuable assignment in connecting theory to pop culture and understanding how narratives can both challenge and reinforce societal norms.
